EBS = Google + 10 Years

Google is expanding it’s network:

Google said Wednesday that it will start testing a new broadband network that will deliver speeds of more than 100 times faster than traditional broadband.

The Internet search giant is aiming to link up with states and municipalities to build and test a fiber-optic network that will offer download speeds of about 1 gigabit per second, according to a blog post on the company’s Web site. Google said that speed would be fast enough to download a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes.

The article annoys me too much to quote entirely. It’s basically the Broadband Operating System/Enron Intelligent Network. Actually, if you look at some of the old EBS documents, you see that EBS preceded many of Google’s “inventions” by at least a decade. The idea of cloud computing and services via network are pure EBS inventions. Google Documents, for instance, was described in great detail in EBS documents, but, of course, not as “Google Documents”.

On the one hand, I am full of pride for the EBS engineers: their work has been vindicated. But I also hate that they are not the ones getting the deserved credit for their work.

Bittersweet.

    As usual you keep pointing out the injustice of the Enron EBS indictments.

    Not only are they not getting credit, Hirko, Shelby and Yeager were indicted for inventing services that never existed before and announcing those invention ideas at the Analyst Conference 2000.

    The record is clear if you read the transcripts which are public record. This is especially true if you read the part with Sun CEO Scott McNeally. He actually picks his cell phone up and says “some day there will be streaming media to this”.

    The crime is that the DOJ can get away with putting innocent people who invent things in prison (Hirko) and can take away freedom from people like Shelby and Yeager for almost 10 years(indictment removes civil rights) and still be trying to put Shelby in prison.

    Thanks for pointing this out.

    I love the idea of videos on cell phones being so crazy futuristic back then, but it was. Hirko, Shelby and Yeager were a dream team. I love them for their ability to create this massive system. For having the courage to do it. Imagine being Shelby and selling your company to do this, and Hirko and Yeager having the imagination, and being willing to put in the time and effort to actually build the system. It takes a great deal of courage to do that. And then for all of them to fight so long. I hope that Hirko has found a measure of peace. I hope that now that the end is in sight, he can rest a little bit. It makes me so happy that Yeager can go on with his life, but God, he fought for eight years to bring us video on our cell phones and he has gotten absolutely no credit for that. The man is a genius. And Shelby… he’s still fighting. In the end, he won’t get credit for his accomplishments either. Nobody will ever give EBS the credit it deserves. Well, at least until my book is published. Then I hope I can show some people exactly where all this streaming media came from.
